É stata una grande serata ai Writers Guild of America Awards per i film Copia Originale e Eighth Grade, la serie televisiva Barry, La meravigliosa Maisel, The Americans e L’assassinio di Gianni Versace ; e, sebbene non fosse nominato in nessuna categoria, l’attore-regista Ron Howard.
Una settimana prima che gli Academy Awards segnino la fine della stagione dei premi, Nicole Holofcener e Jeff Whitty hanno ottenuto il trofeo della WGA per la sceneggiatura adattata di Copia Originale , basato sul libro di memorie dello scrittore dissidente Lee Israel, mentre il regista e sceneggiatore Bo Burnham, Eighth Grade, ha ottenuto il premio per la sceneggiatura originale.
I trofei televisivi sono andati a serie che sono state spesso onorate negli ultimi mesi, tra cui il prodotto di FX The Americans , che ha vinto come serie drammatica; La meravigliosa signora Maisel per la serie comica; La serie limitata di FX The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story per adattato serie miniserie ; e il thriller ispirato a Stephen King di Hulu, Castle Rock, o la serie originale longform. È andata bene anche alla commedia della HBO, Barry , che ha vinto sia come nuova serie che come commedia episodica.
Visti i due outsider vincitori per la parte filmica, la corsa all’Oscar come miglior sceneggiatura (originale e adattata) si fa incerta.
